So we played this little gig at a coffehouse_winebar up in Bonnie Brae last Saturday. We want to thank everyone who came out to hear us play and some of the new friends we made who stuck around after the wine tasting wrapped up. The place is called CapuVino and its got a cozy vibe to it. We were able to play a nice little 80-90 minute concert set of original tunes. We took a feed from the little console we played through and grabbed what has turned into some mp3 files.
This song is called Reunion. There is a fully produced version of it on The Ballad of Billy Saigon CD available at the link below. This song started as a songwriter’s exercise. I had read somewhere that a good challenge for writing was to write a song with a one word title, for example, the song by Willie Nelson made famous by Patsy Cline- “Crazy”.
So fishing around for ideas I started to write. Victoria and I are all about music that has at its heart a spirit of hope and redemption. I see no need at this point in my life to write songs commenting on the sad state of what humanity continues to get wrong as it shuffles towards its eventual evolution or demise, whichever way it goes. Certainly there are topics worth addressing, however even as I do attempt to write about such things I prefer to come from a place of Spirit. Whatever Spirit is…which I most definitely can’t define…and even if I could I would not be so inclined as to deny anyone else the opportunity for growth that comes with their own journey towards that definition.
So from that place in space we get the song REUNION. A song about the spark that jumps the gap between what we think we may be and that divinity that we quite possibly may have emanated from. Plus Victoria just plays the holy crap of the harmonica on this song, which is reason enough unto itself to always play it.
My amigo Paul Williams, a truly fine human and one of my dearest friends on the planet, has commented on how much he thinks of this song. You may know Paul from (as he puts it) his Smokey and the Bandit Art Film Trilogy, or the many amazing songs he has written in his Hall of Fame Songwriter career. He is one of the gifts to music that we have been given in the past number of years and knows his way around songs. If you get a chance to catch the musical production of HAPPY DAYS that is debuting at the Goodspeed Theatre in CT, don’t miss it. Except for the title song from the TV show he wrote all the tunes and they are spectacular. Really. They’ll blow you away.
Paul’s support of my songwriting and in particular this song has been so encouraging as I trudge through the years of obscurity that writing spirit oriented folk based material pretty much insures. Its as a bit of a thanks to him for his love and support that I post this song from this recent live gig.
I will be posting some more songs from this gig, and future gigs a we do them. You can also catch these over at the Babamuse site and specifically the Freebies page at this link here.
These are free for the taking. Share them with Friends and fans of this type of music. Please put the word out about Wes and Victoria and send us mail at the link on this site. We’ll add you to our mailing list. If you let us know Venues in your area we will try and come out your way and do a live show if we can.
Here is the song REUNION
