This is a video from a DVD we are prepping for release. It was a house concert
hosted by our friend Ruth Freshman in Denver, Colorado.
The tune is basically a blues tune, and the Katie referred to in the title is Katrina.
Thanks to YouTube for hosting it for us, and to all the folks who have found it there.
This song comes off a CD we have created called Red Road Songs. You can find out more
about it at the Soloamoeba link on this blog.
I spent the better part of a decade studying at the knee of a teacher who led me down the
Red Road Trail of American Indian Spirituality. Over this decade I participated in a number of ceremonies,
including the Sundance Ceremony, which I did up on reservation land in Burns, Oregon.
Nothing like going for 3 days and nights with no food or water to break down preconceptions about what is and
isn’t important in life. It was transformational in many ways and I felt it was
somewhat of a luxury to have survived it in many respects. Its safe to say that parts of me did
not survive it.
From these experiences have come a number of things, including a few songs. I ran these
songs by the Elders who taught me before ever letting them into the public space. This I did
out of respect for their sacrifice in teaching me. I did this with their encouragement.
Its important for me to clarify here that these songs represent no specific tribal teaching
and I am in no way affiliated with any tribe. As you will see by the few pictures I currently
have posted on our site I am decidedly a “white guy”. I am not interested in the controversy
so many Native Americans engage regarding the “poaching of their culture by the White Man”,
as it is ther Elders who risked the negativity and ostracism of their own tribes by teaching
me and others like me. It was their courage and spiritual belief that without teaching
“non-natives” that the misconceptions between cultures would never be eradicated. I am grateful
for the opportunity to learn, to pray, to suffer and to grow alongside these brave teachers.
I have no interest in being a member of the “wannabe” tribe. I represent myself as nothing
other than what I am. I am a human being attempting to grow in experience and compassion,
and learn “to see the similarities rather than the differences”. Which is what this song is about.
The lyrics can be found on a link on our blog site. I hope you enjoy the tune.
May You Walk In Beauty.
